About California Pizza Kitchen at Pasadena

California Pizza Kitchen at Pasadena represents a distinctive chapter in the evolution of American casual dining, bringing the innovative spirit of California-style cuisine to the heart of Pasadena. Located at 99 N Los Robles Ave, this establishment stands as part of a remarkable legacy that began in 1985 when attorneys Rick Rosenfield and Larry Flax opened the first California Pizza Kitchen in Beverly Hills with a revolutionary vision: to transform pizza from a traditional Italian staple into a canvas for creative culinary expression.[1] The Pasadena location embodies this same philosophy, offering diners an escape from conventional pizza experiences and inviting them into a world where California creativity meets contemporary dining culture.

The concept behind California Pizza Kitchen emerged from a bold idea that pizza didnโ€™t need to be confined to tomato sauce and mozzarella. Instead, the founders envisioned a restaurant where pizza could showcase the diverse, fresh ingredients and flavor combinations that define California cuisine.[5] This vision was brought to life through the culinary expertise of Ed LaDou, a legendary pizza chef who had previously worked at Wolfgang Puckโ€™s Spago restaurant, where he developed over 250 unique pizza concepts using unconventional ingredients like patรฉ, smoked salmon, and caviar.[5] When Rosenfield and Flax recruited LaDou to help them reinvent pizza for the masses, they created something truly transformative. The result was the iconic BBQ Chicken Pizza, a dish that became so successful it inspired competitors across the nation, with major chains like Dominoโ€™s and Pizza Hut eventually introducing their own barbecue chicken pizza variations.[5]

The Pasadena location serves as a modern casual-dining establishment that continues this tradition of culinary innovation while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that has made California Pizza Kitchen a beloved destination for over four decades.[3] The restaurantโ€™s modern setting provides the perfect backdrop for an extensive menu that goes far beyond traditional pizza offerings. While the original BBQ Chicken Pizza remains the number-one seller and a testament to the brandโ€™s enduring appeal, the Pasadena location features a comprehensive selection of inventive pizzas that showcase seasonal ingredients and creative flavor combinations.[3] Beyond pizza, the menu encompasses artisanal pastas, fresh salads, and other contemporary American fare, ensuring that every guest finds something to satisfy their palate.

What distinguishes California Pizza Kitchen at Pasadena is its multifaceted approach to dining and catering services. Operating as both a pizza restaurant and American restaurant, the establishment also functions as a caterer, cocktail bar, mobile caterer, pasta shop, and offers pizza delivery and pizza takeaway services, along with salad and soup options.[1] This versatility makes it an ideal destination for casual lunches, family dinners, special occasions, or corporate events. The cocktail bar component adds an additional layer of sophistication, allowing guests to pair their meals with carefully crafted beverages in a relaxed, contemporary environment.

  • For table service a tip of 15โ€“20% is customary; at counter-service places tipping is optional.

Food has always been great. My problem has always been with service. I arrived today 9/5/2026 at 7 pm. I asked the host what will be quicker, outside or inside? He said patio. I waited and saw a couple with a dog come behind us without a reservation. They sat them in the patio first. No big deal since they had a dog with them. A party of 7 arrived afterwards. I was listening and they did not have a reservation. They sat them at the patio section. 2 other couples that arrived afterwards and were sat down inside before us. I got pissed and asked and the old man hostess who was attending guests said patio takes a while. I would have selected inside but the host at the booth said patio will be faster. Rather than making a big deal, I left. The host at the booth and old man hostess were disorganized. The old man hostess speaks in a professional manner but in a rude way. If you don't like working there then just leave or clean tables.

Good Italian place at the correct price. Service was a little slow, but it might've been the dinner rush.

We tried the salmon pizza and the avocado salad pizza, and both were surprisingly great. The avocado one was especially interesting โ€” it literally looks like a fresh avocado salad sitting on top of a pizza, but somehow it just works. The combination of creamy avocado, fresh toppings, and the crispy base made it feel light but still really satisfying. The salmon pizza was also really good, with a nice balance of savory and fresh flavors. In general, dishes like salmon and avocado together tend to work well because you get that mix of rich, creamy texture from avocado and savory depth from the salmon, creating a really balanced bite . Overall, it felt like a fun twist on pizza โ€” fresh, a bit different from the usual, and definitely memorable. If youโ€™re in the mood for something unique that still tastes great, this place is worth checking out.

We hadnโ€™t been back to CPK with the family since before COVIDโ€”it used to be one of our regular spots when the kids were younger. This visit was a huge letdown. The food quality, cleanliness, and service have all noticeably declined. We all agreed it was a mistake coming back, and we wonโ€™t be returning. For the price, there are plenty of places that deliver a far better meal and overall experience.

Had a very nice evening here, had a couple of drinks with dinner. We started indoor and then moved outdoor once the masses had left. Loved the outdoor ambience. I would have given the food 5 stars but the Churro dessert was a bit of a let down. Service wise, she was busy but still attentive enough to not disappoint. Overall, great spot.

To be honest, I havenโ€™t been to a CPK in years, but my coworkers suggested it for lunch since they have some solid specials for a good price. They offer a bunch of ยฝ + ยฝ combos, and I went with the BBQ chicken salad and a personal Thai chicken pizza. The salad was tasty fresh and flavorful. The pizza was okay; I remember liking it more in the past, but this time the crust was a little hard. They also give you free bread with olive oil and vinegar, and I really liked that dip. Overall, it was a decent lunch for the price. Service was quick, which is great if youโ€™re on a lunch break if youโ€™re in a hurry, Iโ€™d recommend ordering from the bar.

Happy hour is a good deal, but if you order the pizza on happy hour make sure you tell them because they wonโ€™t double check thatโ€™s what you want. I ended up paying $20 for a pizza, but I wanted the happy hour. The buffalo Cauliflower is so good. And this new drink they have called a Paloma is delicious.

We stopped by this location on the way home from LA. The location it's at can be a little pain in regards to parking depending on the time of the day. In total, there were 4 of us. The hostess was responsive and friendly. We sat down within 10 minutes upon arriving. It was roughly 2 pm Sunday afternoon. My fiancรฉe ordered Tequila Fettuccine, and I ordered Alfredo Fettuccine. It came out within 15 minutes of us ordering, and it was nice and hot, tasteful as usual! The server was friendly and attentive. They were advertising that you can order their pizza's to take home for $8.00 a piece. We left with 2! I'd definitely come back here if we were in the vicinity again.
